Brescia won the two Italian league games, while Olimpia prevailed in the Super Cup final and the Italian Cup semifinal. The consistent pattern has been high scores, with offenses outperforming defenses in terms of effectiveness. Brescia averaged 91.5 points in the four games played against Milan; Olimpia averaged 92.2. In the last three, Brescia has always scored at least 90 points (76 in the Super Cup), while Olimpia has never dropped below 81 and reached 106 points scored during the Torino win. In the playoffs, scoring is usually lower, but so far, nothing like that happened between these two teams, and the numbers support the eye test: Olimpia finished the regular season first in two-point shooting, while Brescia finished first in three-point shooting. Another important factor: they were the two most effective teams from the line, Milan 83.5 percent and Brescia 83.0 percent. Germani has built a fair number of wins on free-throw shooting: this season, they have attempted 2,924 free throws (second only to Venezia). Home court advantage is on Brescia’s side. They have lost four times at home all season (Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Treviso, and Trieste in Game 1 of the quarterfinals). Finally, Germani comes into this semifinals with 37 games played, compared to Olimpia’s 74. However, Milan had a “free” week after the quarterfinals, while Brescia needed five games in ten days to defeat Trieste.

Game 1 is scheduled to be played on Wednesday, May 29th, in Brescia, at 20:00

Marko Guduric vs Miro Bilan

COACH PEPPE POETA – “It is crucial for us to enter the series the right way starting with defense and sharing the ball correctly. With 18 points and 7-of-9 shooting from the field, Josh Nebo (12.0 points and 8.2 rebounds on 19-of-27 from the field against Brescia this year) got the better of Miro Bilan (eight points and four rebounds). In November, in Brescia, Germani won 98-92 with 23 points from Miro Bilan and 18 from Jason Burnell, enough to overwhelm the 28-point effort of Armoni Brooks (who in three appearances against Brescia scored 74 points). In February, at the Palalido, Brescia won 90-81 after a comeback led by the 31 points scored by Amedeo Della Valle. Two weeks later, Olimpia took revenge by prevailing 106-102 in the semi-final of the Italian Cup in Torino, despite another 29 points produced by Della Valle and 28 scored by CJ Massinburg (who is out in the playoffs due to injury). Olimpia had four players over 15 points, Guduric, Shields, LeDay and Brooks (27).

Quinn Ellis going to the rim against Maurice Ndour

BRESCIA OUTLOOK – Brescia is a highly experienced team, with a core that has played together for years, and is now in its third consecutive semifinal appearance. Over a longer period, it has also won an Italian Cup. In the first round, it eliminated Trieste in five games, overcoming a home defeat in Game 1 and despite an injury that plagued Amedeo Della Valle. In the playoffs, the most effective player has been Miro Bilan, a Croatian center whom Olimpia faced in the playoffs (like Jason Burnell) when he was in Sassari, too. In the series against Trieste, he averaged 14.6 points per game on 58.3 percent two-point shooting, while also grabbing 9.6 rebounds per game, including 2.6 offensive rebounds. His playing time dropped slightly compared to the regular season (from 28.6 to 25.6 minutes per game). Jason Burnell, as always coming off the bench, produced 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, though he shot 41.7 percent from two compared to the 51.8 percent he had in the regular season. However, small forward Demetre Rivers’ numbers improved in the playoffs (12.2 points, 66.7 percent from two and 55.8 percent from three). Nikola Ivanovic, a key player in Game 5, is averaging 12.0 points and 5.2 assists per game, shooting 42.8 percent from three. Amedeo Della Valle’s numbers must be taken with a grain of salt because of his injury: he’s averaging 11.1 points per game on 7-of-22 three-point shooting but 15-of-16 from the free throw line. The starting five is rounded out by power forward Maurice Ndour (7.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in the playoffs), who also spells Bilan at center and has a lethal mid-range shot. Having lost CJ Massinburg to injury, Brescia signed guard Jayden Nunn, who graduated from Baylor last season and is coming off 33 games in Austin in the G-League averaging 13.3 points per game. He’s currently averaging 8.4 points per game but is shooting 50.0 percent from three. David Cournooh is producing 7.0 points per game as the fourth guard, shooting 44.4 percent from three (8 of 18). Joseph Mobio rounds out the big man rotation, providing the team a consistently improving three-point shot.

Pippo Ricci and Jason Burnell

THE BILAN FACTOR – Miro Bilan is one of the league’s most efficient players: in the three wins against Trieste, he averaged 19.3 points per game, shooting 62.9 percent from the field, and grabbing 10.3 rebounds; in the two losses, he averaged 7.5 points, grabbed 8.0 rebounds, and shot 46.2 percent from the field. This trend is similar to the one recorded in the games against Olimpia (20.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in the two wins; 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two losses).

ADV REBUS – Amedeo Della Valle has been a challenge for Milano’s defense this year. In the previous four games played so far, he’s scored 87 total points, including 60 in the last two outings, converting 31-of-34 free throws. Limiting his trips to the line (over eight on average) will be crucial for Olimpia, given that over four games this season, he’s scored over 36% of his points from the stripe.

THE CONSISTENCY OF BURNELL – Jason Burnell has been Brescia’s most consistent player: in the four games played so far he has always scored in double figures with 13.7 points per game and 58.1 percent shooting from two, 18 free throw attempts, 4.5 on average, a dangerous figure because Burnell is virtually perfect from the free throw line (94.5 percent this season).

Josh Nebo right to the rim against Maurice Ndour

BRESCIA CONNECTION – Olimpia coach Peppe Poeta coached Brescia last year, when they reached the Italian league finals, losing to Virtus Bologna.
