In Game 1, they showed their qualities as a physical team, with the defensive specialists needed to keep the ball off the primary ball handlers (Quinn Ellis was first attacked by Tomas Woldetensae and then by Lorenzo Uglietti) and players capable to keep the pressure on Milan’s guards using the imposing physicality of Troy Caupain and Jaylen Barford. Olimpia, however, controlled the game from the beginning and still showed significant room for improvement; for example, it didn’t score a single three-pointer in the entire second half, and in the third quarter, Olimpia lost control of its board, allowing Reggio Emilia to stay alive with a few too many second chances. Then, it shot exceptionally well from two-point range, executing almost perfectly on offense. Olimpia produced 28 free throw points, hit five three-pointers in the first quarter when the game was being built, grabbed more rebounds than the opponent, and handled the ball well. To stay alive, Reggio Emilia hit 13 three-pointers, not all of them from its specialists, so it wasn’t a soft game, especially from the second quarter onward. Now there will be adjustments; Reggio Emilia will take the court with a sense of urgency, and Olimpia will have to do the same.

Marko Guduric

Game 2 will be played in Milano, Unipol Forum, at 20:45 on Monday, May 18th.

COACH PEPPE POETA – “In Game 1, we were especially good on offense, scoring 31 points in the first quarter against what was the league’s best defense in the second half of the season, but they never gave up, proving they’re a tough team. We’ll have to approach Game 2 the same way, because they pass the ball, they’re confident, they defend, and they’re talented; so, it’s not enough to just take it one game at a time; we have to have the same physicality they have and play it possession by possession.”

MARKO GUDURIC – “In the first 15 minutes, our defense was excellent. I think that was the key to our win. We have to stay focused for the entire 40 minutes of every game. We won the first one, but it’s only one win; so, for now, nothing changes in our approach.”

Shavon Shields

2 AND 3-POINT SHOOTING– The difference in Game 1 was primarily in two-point shooting: Olimpia finished 25-of-34, or 73.5 percent, versus 17-of-37, or 45.9 percent, for the opposing team. Milano 14-of-18 in the first half, in which it scored 57 points. In the second half, it only scored 39 because the three-point percentage changed drastically. Olimpia shot 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, but 1-of-14 in the final three periods, and especially 0-of-8 in the second half. In the end, Reggio Emilia shot better from three, 13 threes against six, finishing at 41.9 percent not only thanks to the 41 points coming from the Caupain-Barford duo but also to the 7-of-14 shooting from Woldetensae, Severini and Rossato, three dangerous shooters who, however, had all remained below 40 percent this season (especially the latter two).

Ousmane Diop

THE REBOUNDING BATTLE – The perception is that Reggiana was more effective in offensive rebounding, grabbed 13 offensive board, but this was mostly true in the third quarter (eight) only, while in the first half it had only two. Overall, Reggiana grabbed 13 of 38 offensive rebounds available, while Olimpia grabbed 10 of its 25. By the numbers, Olimpia performed better. But there was an anomaly in the third quarter.

THE SECOND UNIT – “I don’t consider it that way,” Coach Peppe Poeta explained in the press conference. The five players who came off the bench in Game 1 scored 48 points, the same as the five starters, with 11-of-15 on two-pointers and 17-of-17 from the free throw line. The Nebo-Diop duo, in particular, performed well, scoring 23 points, 7-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

THE TURNOVER FACTOR – They’re another potentially decisive factor, as Reggiana is the league’s best team at controlling the ball. In Game 1, they turned the ball over nine times, one less than their season average. However, Olimpia was also exemplary in this regard, with ten total turnovers. They had little impact in the first game.

GAME NOTES – With 19 points in Game 1, Shavon Shields reached 1,146 career points scored in the Italian league playoffs and entered the all-time top 10, surpassing Renato Villalta. Shields is the fourth-highest scorer in Olimpia’s playoff history. Olimpia is now 216-143 in playoff games, 91-41 in the quarterfinals.

Armoni Brooks

To give full meaning to its convincing Game 1, Olimpia needs to repeat its performance in Game 2, and only then it would truly gain a significant advantage in this quarterfinal series.
