Kelvin Sampson, his coach at the University of Houston, once said that Armoni Brooks was the kind of guy everyone would have wanted to marry his daughter. The coach wanted to praise his moral integrity and demeanor: “I was raised well, I come from a very good family, and there are values they instilled in me, like caring for others or the importance of family itself, that led him to say this. But he also wanted to encourage me to be more aggressive on the court because as a freshman, he considered me a bit too soft,” Armoni laughs, recalling that episode.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sampson is one of the great names in college basketball: he coached Oklahoma, coached Indiana, and then built another winning program in Houston. \u201cI owe a lot to Coach Kelvin Sampson,\u201d Brooks says. \u201cHis practices were intense, but even off the court, he always tried to build relationships. He\u2019d come to talk to you to make sure everything was going well and that you understood what we were doing. So, when it came time for practice, you felt more like part of a family than school. That\u2019s what the University of Houston is all about: those were three fantastic years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armoni Brooks is a Texan, a state that has always had a special relationship with Olimpia, just think of Curtis Jerrells and Keith Langford, but also Josh Nebo. Langford in particular, because he has been a sort of mentor to Brooks in recent years. “He told me right away that I would be a good fit here, that I would be joining a first-class organization, comparable to an NBA team in terms of caring to the players, the practice structure, the treatments, and the travel accommodations. He gave me advice on settling in, and I continued to talk to him throughout this time,” he says. “Olimpia was patient with him, and I’m glad they did, because it’s never easy for an American to adapt to European basketball. I was fortunate enough to start in Cremona in the second division and gradually move up the ladder. He was playing at the highest-level right from the beginning,” says Langford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of their friendship, a big brother-to-little brother thing, dates back to when Keith retired from playing and returned to live full-time in Austin. \u201cHe saw me working out in a gym and came to me with the idea of \u200b\u200bplaying one-on-one. His personal trainer was there, too. And since then, we’ve always stayed in touch. We’ve even played together a few times. He’s given me advice, tips on how to take advantage of certain situations for myself and the team. We talk at least once a week; he’s a role model for me. Jerrells is, too. Keith is someone I can turn to when I need tips, because I know he’ll help me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armoni Brooks: Houston Rockets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

His fascination with basketball was born with him. His father was a fan and a player, always looking for a game when he could. Armoni, as soon as he could walk, began following him everywhere. “I was glued to him; all I wanted to do was go to the gym, play basketball, shoot, and then try to dunk. Basketball has been a part of my life since I was one year old,” he smiles. At McNeill High School in Austin, he was considered a good prospect, but not an overwhelming one, yet he still earned a spot on the University of Houston roster. It was something of shock for him. “In high school, I was generally more athletic than other kids and didn’t need to shoot from outside, but when I got to college, I found players who were taller, bigger, and faster,” he says. So, he decided that shooting would become his trademark weapon. “Shooting for me is not a God-given talent, it’s something I’ve worked on, for countless hours. I really developed it over the course of my three years in college until it became my best skill. But I want to continue using it, working on it, expanding my repertoire. A player I follow closely is Kevin Punter because we are of similar size, we play at the same position, and our skills are again similar. I’ve studied him extensively over these two years in Milan,” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a low-key first year with the Cougars, averaging 4.4 points per game on a team that finished the year unranked, with a 21-11 record, his sophomore year witnessed a significant leap in production. Even though he was one of the team’s best players, he was coming off the bench. “I tried to fulfill my role on a very strong team. Whatever Coach wanted me to do I did, I never let my ego took the best of me. I didn’t need to start or play for a certain number of minutes. I listened to what the coach needed me to do to win games and tried to do to the best of my capabilities. And then coming off the bench has its advantages: it allows you to see how the game is going and mentally prepare yourself for when it’s time to step on the court. That has not changed here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disappointment is that a very good season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a one-point loss to Michigan. And in those two games, Brooks performed below his potential. But when he returned for his third season, his development was at its peak, and the team was ready to make him a leader. In 2018-19, Houston won 33 of 37 games and was at some point ranked No. 1. Brooks finished the year averaging 13.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. \u201cWe basically had ten starters, and when the top five sat, nothing changed. We had a great season because of that, and then each of us was held accountable; we motivated each other. This allowed us to win so much. At the end of the season, a shot doomed us in the NCAA Tournament, but it was a memorable year for our school,\u201d he recalls. In the third round, against Kentucky, a game in which he scored 20 points with six three-pointers, a three-pointer made by Tyler Herro, now a shooter for the Miami Heat, decided the game and ended Houston\u2019s run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, Brooks decided to declare for the draft, because colleges couldn’t pay players like they do now, and anyone who could go pro did so at the first opportunity. “I didn’t expect to be drafted; I left after three years betting on myself. I knew I could play in the NBA, and I just needed an opportunity, whether I was drafted or not. I just wanted to get my foot in the door and build a reputation,” he says. He partially succeeded: in his first year as a pro, he played 20 games for Houston (averaging 11.2 points), in his second, 54 between Houston and Toronto, then spent a lot of time in the G-League and eventually got another opportunity in Brooklyn. “There are many factors that affect your ability to earn permanent place in the NBA. I succeeded for a while, but I wasn’t able to open the door completely. Now I feel like a European player. It’s an extremely high and competitive level,” he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 28, he still has a lot of room for improvement. “I think offensively I need to learn to read and react to situations a little quicker. I’m already at a good point playing off the ball, but maybe I can use the pick-and-roll a little more often. On defense,” he continues, “I need to improve my awareness of situations off the ball, not allow backdoor cuts, being a better on-ball defender, stay in front of the opponent, and not allow any room for driving.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This season, he scored a lot, often in clutch moments. “I try not to think about how important a shot is because you build the habit of shooting with confidence in practice, shooting over and over again. Of course, when we won the Italian Cup and people were shouting MVP, MVP, that was a surreal moment, almost an out-of-body experience.” Then came the EuroLeague shows, twice against Panathinaikos, against Olympiacos, and against Efes when he scored 31 points. “But I haven’t changed. My life is my family, my wife and three young children who take up all my time off the court. On the court, there\u2019s more people game-planning for me. It’s about adapting, letting the game come to me, rather than force situations.” This is coming from the MVP, a two-time MVP in truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
