The momentum changing play happened early in the fourth quarter. After spending the night chasing Asvel by a margin moving consistently between one, two and seven points, Olimpia made its move. Kyle Hines scored five consecutive points off driving lay-ups, once was fouled and made the ensuing free throw. Suddenly, Olimpia led by five and looked in control. Asvel called a play for the 2.21 mt long Youssoupha Fall, Kyle Hines soared high and denied the pass, he touched the ball, looked like a potential steal. The bounce favored the French center so Hines, frustrated, made a foul to send him to the line, prevent an easy two. But upon video review from the referees, the foul was labeled a flagrant one. Fall made his free throws, Asvel retained possession and used it to score a three. All of a sudden the game was tied and Asvel had momentum. Then over the last five minutes nothing worked for Olimpia on its way to miss six free throws out of eight while Asvel made the right plays and won 79-73. One more frustrating EuroLeague night for Olimpia. “Tha flagrant called on Hines was the turning point of the game, another one was late in the first half when they didn’t recognize an offensive foul on Billy Baron, who was a little shaky in the second half, that made De Colo open for the buzzer beating three and opened up a five-point lead for them. The refs apologized for missing the call, but the damage was done. I think we played well for 30 minutes in the middle of the game, surely the defensive pressure applied on us in the EuroLeague is much more effective than what we face in the Italian league and the quality of our passing game is exposed in its weakness – Coach Messina said – But at the end we had many turnovers, many poor decision down the stretch, another bad shooting night and finally we missed our free throws in the fourth quarter. This is part of the game, you cannot blame anyone for missing free throws, however they were a factor in our loss.”
