The championship series moves to Milan for Game 3 and 4, with Olimpia and Virtus tied at 1. As a matter of fact, a best-of-seven series has been turned into a best-of-five series, with home-court advantage moving towards Olimpia, capable of winning Game 1 in Bologna, breaking streak of 16 consecutive playoffs’ win for Virtus. So far, as Coach Ettore Messina said after the second game, “rebounds have been the key element of the two games. It is not a surprise because both teams are missing a lot of shots and having a few extra opportunities secures an advantage.” In the first game, Olimpia had won the rebounding battle 49-41, in the second Bologna prevailed 49-36, reversing the situation, perhaps helped by Kyle Hines’ playing time, reduced to 15 minutes compared to the 29 he had in Game 1, due to two fouls committed over the first three minutes of the game. However, the fact allowed Paul Biligha to get into the series with a lot of energy and consistency which is good. All the individual players so far have been inconsistent on both fronts. For Olimpia, the most consistent have been Shavon Shields (16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game) and Gigi Datome (12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game), the latter more dangerous from three-point range in Game 1, more effective with his customary fade-away from mid-range in Game 2. Devon Hall is not shooting well from the field, but with his offensive energy, he has earned 12 trips to the line, scoring 11.0 points per game. It is clear that rebounds, defensive efficiency on the opponent’s main players, better percentages will be the keys not only in Game 3 and for both teams. Olimpia will play in a full-capacity Mediolanum Forum and a packed house for the first time since November 1, 2019, when 12,222 fans witnessed the EuroLeague over Barcelona. During that season, there were two more games with over 10,000 fans attending, before the two-year period of closed doors or reduced capacities began.
