Olimpia competed in Madrid, that was what Coach Ettore Messina asked to his team entering the game against perennial powerhouse Real Madrid, whose winning streak reached nine. Although, in order to defeat Olimpia, Real had to play a 40-minute game, raise the physicality of the defense in the second half and come from behind. Olimpia led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter and was up by nine at the intermission. 76-67 was the final score. “Their defensive physicality and athleticism kept us from executing our offense in the second half and that made the difference, but we faced one of the top teams and the effort was there. We competed,” Coach Messina said at the end. Olimpia had a marvelous game by Vlado Micov who scored 22 points and was 4-for-5 from three. Unexpectedly, Olimpia won the rebounding battle 42-32, grabbing 13 offensive boards. Jeff Brooks, had 8, Kaleb Tarczewski who was very aggressive in the first half, had 8 points and 8 boards, Gudaitis added five offensive rebounds. Real Madrid didn’t shoot particularly well, but in the crucial third quarter rode Anthony Randolph hot hand. Ha made three threes, Taylor added one and in a matter of minutes a 11-point lead evaporated. Olimpia stayed close, came within four a couple of times in the fourth, but Real Madrid found more resources late in the game, especially Jordan Mickey while Facundo Campazzo closed with 12 assists.
