Short-handed among the bigs, no Josh Nebo, no Devin Booker, the returning Zach LeDay with no rhythm and minute restrictions, Olimpia struggled mightly in the middle. Hapoel took advantage of it establishing the inside game od Dan Oturu, its powerful big who scored eight of the team’s first 10 points at the rim. It was a prequel of what was goint to happen all night long. Hapoel Tel Aviv won 105-83, a dominant display of offensive execution, shooting ability and depth. They shot 45 percent on threes, went 31-for-43 on twos. Olimpia had a good first half, built a five-point lead in the second, gaining momentum with a powerful Leandro Bolmaro’s entrance, sustained by Armoni Brooks and Quinn Ellis mostly. But the second half was a no contest. Motley added his physicality inside to the Oturu’s imposing size and the guards never turned the ball over, eliminating any fastbreak opportunities for Olimpia. The result was a 12-0 run to start the third quarter and Olimpia was done for the night, despite shooting over 58 percent on twos, going 18-for-20 from the line, 21 assists (Quinn Ellis finished with 15 points and six assists, one assist and only one turnover in 29 minutes) and just eight turnovers. But the 5-for-24 ice-cold three-point shooting night doomed any chance to stay competitive against an offensive juggernaut in a very inspired night. This and the defense. “In the first half – Coach Messina remarked – we played well offensively depsite missing some open threes, but defensively we didn’t have the aggressiveness and physicality to limit them somehow.”
