Playoff Shavon Shields replicated exactly his Game 3 performance and maybe he did even better. He scored 27 points, 18 in the first half, and nine in the fourth when Olimpia needed them the most. Olimpia defeated Trento 89-82 and closed out the best-of-five series 3-1. It is the eleventh straight qualification to the Italian league semifinals for Olimpia. As it was anticipated, the close-out win was the most difficult to achieve. Trento had a very good start to the game, leading by as many as eight points in the first quarter and played all-out ina magnificent third period when it scored 29 points and took the lead. However, Olimpia kept its composure, went to his most locked in player and overcame a foul situation that looked terrible. Olimpia had to finish the game without Zach LeDay and Nikola Mirotic who fouled out in a matter of seconds. So, Coach Ettore Messina went small, using Shavon Shields at the 4 spot and Pippo Ricci at the nominal 5. Ricci grabbed a crucial offensive rebounds down the stretch that he converted with a short lay-up with the shot-clock expiring. Olimpia grabbed a couple of offensive boards that went a long way in helping the team win. Armoni Brooks was a factor too. “Two months ago I wouldn’t have believed that Brooks could start a playoff game not just because he can score but also for his defense and rebounding prowess,” Coach Messina said after winning his playoff game number 100 all-time. The small ball line-up featured Leandro Bolmaro as a positionless player: he advanced the ball on different times when Anthony Lamb was defending him, played all over the floor finishing the game with 17 points. Olimpia will start its semifinal series next Saturday.
