Olimpia resisted for about 25 minutes, then Panathinaikos’ defense and physicality emerged. Led by an amazing performance by Nick Calathes (two rebounds ahy of a triple double, playing almost the entire game), Panathinaikos took away late in the third and kept pushing in the fourth, while Calathes was supported by Keith Langford and DeShaun Thomas, more than anybody else. The greens won 95-83. Olimpia accepted the challenge in the first half, closed with a 47-44 lead, but was plagued by foul troubles. Kaleb Tarczewski had two quick fouls, then also Alen Omic and Chris Burns. Coach Pianigiani tried to play small, using Jeff Brooks as a nominal five. But the problems became even more evident, when Mike James too was hampered by foul troubles, including the fourth, called late in the third and Panathinaikos in control of the game. “Their physicality in the end decided the game, while we missed too many shots with players used to make them, so the nervosism took the best of us and we struggled in the end. We really wanted to win, probably too much, that mental aspect is something we have to work on, today they were better than us. Obviously they are the kind of team that we struggle against, especially in the middle, with our situations since Gudaitis’ injury”, Coach Pianigiani said.
