Against one of the best defensive teams in Europe, sustained by a capacity crowd in an amazing atmosphere, Olimpia won its sixth road game in Belgrade, 63-57. It’s the fifth straight win and the third holding the opponent below 60 points scored. “We started ice cold offensively but we kept playing, one more time our defensive game was outstanding and gradually we improved our passing and our shooting,” Coach Ettore Messina said. Olimpia was scoreless for almost a six minutes, scored seven points the entire first quarter, but after taking the lead early in the second quarter never looked back, led by as many as 11 points and closed the deal comfortably against a tough and aggressive team. Ben Bentil was the first to find some rhythm offensively then Malcolm Delaney was at his best. He broke the game open in the third quarter, helped by a couple of huge threes made by Pippo Ricci. Delaney finished with 18 points and four threes. His long two with two minutes left in the game right after Red Star came within four basically was decisive. But Olimpia’s game was a defensive masterpiece and also the team did a great work under the boards. “Red Star is one of the best offensive rebounding team in the EuroLeague but we kept them at six and that was huge,” Coach Messina added. Olimpia didn’t go to the line at all until 4:30 left in the game and finished with four free throws attempted. Still, it won the game.
