Olimpia’s defense showed what it can do on a given night. Milan missed a lot of open shots when it was time to put the game to bed, but kept Bologna from becoming dangerous at the end with an impressive defensive outing, especially in the fourth quarter when Virtus implemented a small lineup with four shooters and one nominal big man. 73-68 was the final score. Olimpia had what it needed at the offensive end of the floor, with Zach Le Day and Shavon Shields in an amazing first half and from Kevin Punter mostly in the second. Punter was the guy who tied the game up twice in the third quarter, scoring eight consecutive points. But Olimpia won the game because of its effort and defense, including the one that Punter mounted over Teodosic who had a 3-for-9 night, while Belinelli was held at 1-for-7 from the field and was more effective going to the line. Kyle Hines anchored a defense that kept Virtus at 41 percent from two-point range, way below its average of 55 percent. “We showed the right mentality – Coach Ettore Messina said – We overcame a couple of difficult times, when we went down and our defense was a high-level defense for the entire game, but especially in the fourth quarter.” Hines stayed on the court for the decisive possessions, with four fouls, fixed the defense over Julian Gamble, who hit the ground running early, and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kevin Punter led the scorers with 18 points, Zach LeDay added 16 points and eight boards, Shavon Shields scored 16 points, including a driving lay-up off an offensive rebound in a very hard juncture of the game in the third quarter.
