Olimpia’s furious comeback in the fourth quarter, starting by 11 points down came up short in the last minute. Valencia won in Desio 93-89. A bunch of three-pointers by Vlado Micov (5/5 in the third) and then by Curtis Jerrells brought Olimpia within three. A driving two-pointer by Arturas Gudaitis reduced the gap to one. After a time-out with 41 seconds left in the game, Jerrells intercepted a pass essentially giving Olimpia the chance to win the game. Ironically the same Jerrells who was instrumental in the comeback lost control of the ball. Valencia retrieved it. Then Abalde missed one of two foul shots and again Micov’s rebound wasn’t controlled. Doornekamp recovered the ball and Abalde from the line closed the game. Olimpia led most of the first half and tried early in the second to get away. Valencia was still there in a game resembling a three-point shooting contest in the second half. “At the intermission we should’ve had a bigger margin but we missed too many easy shots, in the third again we missed open shots that led to Valencia’s fastbreak. Again, my players didn’t give up and tried to win up to the end. We had the possession to win and we made a mistake. It’s mirroring our EuroLeague season. No eliminated teams have played so many tight games. That’s why I’m disappointed, we should have three or four more wins. We deserved them. Tonight we had too many players plague by physical problems and it showed”, Coach Pianigiani said. Vlado Micov five days after setting his career-high in the Italian League with 28 points, had 27 and set his career-high in the EuroLeague.
