In the summer of 2019 a great turning point is coming up: Pantaleo Dell’Orco takes the role of club president, but entrusts the responsibility of the “basketball operations” to his new head coach, Ettore Messina, who is one of the most successful coaches in the history of European basketball. The first season is affected by the pandemic that stopped activities during the month of March in 2020. In the 2020/21 season, however, Olimpia won the Super Cup (beating Virtus Bologna in the final, Malcolm Delaney is the MVP) and the Italian Cup with record average margin throughout the Final Eight in Milan. In the championship game, Olimpia knocks down the Vuelle Pesaro. Gigi Datome, brought back to Italy the previous summer, is named MVP of the competition. But the big leap in termas of quality takes place in the EuroLeague: Olimpia won 10 road games, broke many streaks, winning in Tel Aviv, in Madrid, in both away games in Istanbul, in Moscow. At one point, Olimpia won six consecutive games and finished fourth overall with 21 wins. During the playoffs, Olimpia eliminated Bayern Munich 3-2 gaining access to the Final Four for the first time since 1992. The team lost the semifinal game with Barcelona by two points, on Cory Higgins’ last shot. Shavon Shields is included in the second All-EuroLeague team. Olimpia was a successful mix of veterans and emerging youngsters. Among the first stand out Sergio Rodriguez, Gigi Datome and Kyle Hines. Their arrival gives credibility to the project started by Ettore Messina. It’s a cultural change.
