An unexpected turn of events led to Olimpia’s loss in Capo d’Orlando. Because of a great third quarter in terms of sharpness and intensity, Olimpia gained a 10-point lead in the fourth, looking like the game was in the bag. Then a couple of things happened. Charles Jenkins, who mounted a terrific defense on Ryan Boatright fouled out, on top of Alessandro Gentile’s early exit with an injury and Oliver Lafayette and Andrea Cinciarini being unavailable. “All of a sudden we were very tired, couldn’t move the ball, couldn’t get a defensive rebound or playing defense”, Coach Jasmin Repesa said. Two consecutive threes by Jasaitis and Bowers brought Capo d’Orlando within four and still, after two time-outs, the run kept adding up. Capo d’Orlando finally completed a 17-0 incredible run going away and winning 78-71.
The loss wasn’t the baddest news of the day. That was Gentile’s fourth injury of the season. This time it was a lesion of the ligament of the first finger in his right hand. The injury forced him to leave the game in the second period, then it’ll be re-evaluated tomorrow. But it looks like a serious one since the playoffs are just one month away.
