Olimpia took control early and won its second Italian League game over Varese 74-73. In spite of leading the game basically from wire to wire Olimpia allowed Varese to stay alive multiple times because of many shooting mistakes. Olimpia was 6 for 21 from three and missed five crucial free throws down the stretch. That’s why Varese stayed in the game through the end altough the final margin was the product of a buzzer beating three by Damien Hollis when Olimpia had already clinched the win. Jordan Theodore and Andrew Goudelock both scored 21 points taking turns at beating the defense. But by missing too many threes Olimpia let Varese clog the paint. “We expected a tough game and that’s probably why we won after missing so many open shots. We made some mistakes but our defense was good once more. Our fault was to let them comeback after taking a double digit lead in the second half. We need to be solid enough to put opponents away in those situations”, Coach Simone Pianigiani said after the game.
