Olimpia hit the ground running in the playoffs, conquering a convincing 88-62 win over Trento in the quarterfinals Game 1 of the Italian league. Trento started hot from the field, hitting the first four shots, then the defense raised its level and Olimpia – capable to outrebound the opponent 41-29 – took the game over, making 12 threes in the process. Olimpia took the lead late in the first, then progressively extended it and led by more than 20 points from the third quarter and through the end. Kyle Hines set the tone early, made all of six field goal attempts, grabbed seven rebounds, was a huge presence in the middle. Everybody helped. “The only problem is Shavon Shields’ injury – Coach Ettore Messina said at the end – he made a weird move and now we’ll find out what kind of injury he suffered.” Shields led the scorers with 16 points. “We played a solid game, after three or four minutes, our defense took over. Now we have another game in less than 24 hours, it’s a new situation for everybody. We need to find the energy both mentally and physically in order to win Game 2. It’s never easy to play in a back-to-back situation,” Coach Messina added.
