Olimpia built its Game 2, 104-93 win, on a terrific first quarter. In part, it reminded everybody of Game 1’s first period but this time the defensive approach was better and the team never let the opponent to get close. Trento reduced the gap late in the fourth with a sequence of three-pointers made by their two bug guards, Prentiss Hubb and Kamar Baldwin who combined for 44 points. That was all. Olimpia led by as many as 23 points and was never threatened. “Our first quarter defensively was good and allowed us to build a solid lead that made everything easier – Coach Ettore Messina said – We moved the ball quickly offensively; we grabbed some clean rebounds that allowed us to make quick outlet passes and it increased the pace of the game.” Nicolò Melli hit the ground running. He scored the first six points of the game, went 6-for-6 from the field in the first quarter and 8-for-8 at the half. He was all over the floor, establishing his power game inside. Shavon Shields followed suit. He started the game attacking the rim, then he took some threes, and his inside-out game dominated the second quarter. He went to the locker room with 21 points, 4-for-4 from three-point territory. Olimpia scored 35 points in the first period, a season-high, 65 at the half, another season-high. The lead was 17. Shields and Melli combined for 37 points in the first half. More players step up in the second, including Kyle Hines who had a game full of energy at both ends of the floor. Finally, Nikola Mirotic made two threes in a row in the fourth quarter to keep Trento under control. Olimpia finished the night over 60 percent shooting on twos and threes, 11-for-12 from the line. “We established our inside game, going in the low post a lot and we shot a lot more twos tonight,” Coach Messina pointed out. The difference however was moving the ball quickly. Olimpia had 26 assists for the night, Napier led the team with seven, Shields added five, Mirotic added four and Johannes Voigtmann returned to have five assists of his own. “We felt we needed one more guard in this series and Billy Baron was comfortable in his first game back – Coach Messina explained – However, he reported some discomfort in his calf and at this point we’ll stick with Voigtmann who gave us a big lift tonight.”
