Olimpia had its chance to win in Valencia an hard-fought game, but didn’t convert in the end a couple of free throws, two threes and earlier even a pair of layups. That is why Valencia prevailed 86-81. “We had too many ups and downs throughout the game – Coach Ettore Messina said -, especially on defense we allowed too many dribble penetrations. We still had our chances, but we missed some opportunities.” Olimpia allowed 11 threes, converted just 30 percent of its attempts, used a terrific stretch in the second quarter to go ahead at the half, led by as many as six points in the third quarter, but had too many moments of suddenly inconsistent defense. In the third, at one time, it trailed by nine. In the fourth came back and tied the game but when it was time to take over the game some free mistakes happened at both ends of the floor. Two threes to take the lead were missed, three times on a break easy layups were missed, then even two crucial free throws. Olimpia had five players scoring in double figures, led by Shavon Shields’ 17 points, Kyle Hines, in spite of being plagued by foul troubles, scored 13 points, went 6-for-7 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. But, it couldn’t overcome Sam Van Rossom career-night, 21 points. In the closing seconds, he and Klemen Prepelic closed the game from the line.
