A 37-point explosion in the fourth quarter allowed Olimpia to turned the so-called derby into a 101-74 blowout. Milan led basically for the length of the game, although a late rally by Cantù tied up the score at the end of the first quarter (18-18), but it was early in the fourth that finally Olimpia got away and launched itself into a dominating win, the ninth in a row in the Italian league. Olimpia had a lot from a lot of players, Arturas Gudaitis had another MVP-like performance, overcoming early foul troubles with a commanding second half. He finished with 19 points, tying his Italian league career-high but more than that he was an imposing figure in the middle, while playing only 19 minutes. He scored 14 points in the second half. Olimpia was more than that: Curtis Jerrells, as a starter, was instrumental in building a solid lead in the first half, along Mindaugas Kuzminskas, whose quickness in filling the lanes made Olimpia’s fastbreak lethal. He also made some huge jumpers early in the game. “It was a serious game for us – Coach Simone Pianigiani said at the end – under the circumstances we responded well, everybody helped, allowing us to rest some of the guys that we need the most during EuroLeague games”. Olimpia built a two-win lead over Venice in the Italian league and it’s one-win shy of the club’s record for most wins to start a season.
