After allowing uncharacteristically 31 points to Sassari in the second quarter alone, turning a 4-point lead into a 8-point deficit at the end of the first half, Olimpia regrouped, became efficient again at both ends of the floor but especially on defense and came back to win Game 2 of its Italian league semifinals 91-82. It was a 17-point swing in the second half alone. Sergio Rodriguez led the comeback with an amazing second half, when Olimpia shot 7-for-14 from three-point range after a 1-for-8 ice cold shooting first half. But on crucial sequence late in the game, Tommaso Baldasso made a huge three and Devon Hall made another to extend the lead to seven. Shortly after that, on a break Shields scored and was fouled, he missed the additional free throw but Nicolò Melli grabbed the offensive rebound that allowed Rodriguez to make the three that essentially closed the game. “We dug ourselves an hole in the second quarter and we stayed there for a while, but give the guys a lot of credit because the second half was consistent, we regrouped and won the game. It was a good game, but at the same time we have to make sure the second quarter never happens again,” Coach Ettore Messina said at the end. Olimpia is leading the best-of-five series 2-0, with Game 3 scheduled to be played on Wednesday night in Sassari.
