Olimpia controlled the game wire-to-wire in Bologna, led by as many as 21 points in the first half, never trailed and won 73-67, a final score that didn’t reflect the game. Olimpia had a 15-minute show in Bologna, at both ends of the floor, erecting a wall inside while shooting well. Ten turnovers in the first half prevented Olimpia from closing Virtus off in the first half when the margin was 12 points. Still, even when the shooting percentages didn’t support the effort in the second half, Olimpia was able to make the right plays, to defend well and rode its two bigs inside. Gudaitis and Tarczewski had a commanding game, establishing their energy inside. Andrea Cinciarini had a terrific all-around game, scoring eight points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Finally, Vlado Micov made the five consecutive points that shut the door to Bologna and Pascolo grabbed eight bords in the first half. “I liked his game a lot, in the second half we wanted to stretch the floor especially when Gentile played at the 4 and so Pascolo stayed out but his game was good”, Coach Pianigiani said at the end. “We had a solid game, we began with energy and defense like I asked to my players, since the atmosphere was great, Virtus’ size is dangerous and starting without the right amount of energy would have been problematic for us. But we did the right things and even when the energy was low we stayed in the game defensively and used our athleticism inside to hit Virtus in the middle. I’m glad”, was the Coach comment.
