Olimpia resisted like it promised but couldn’t deliver the win in Kaunas, losing 77-65 in a closer-than-it-looks game that Olimpia led for almost three quarters. After taking a five-point lead in the third quarter, Zalgiris took over the game with its aggressiveness, overcoming the rebounding battle and by going repeatedly to the line (31 free throws against 19). Olimpia was plagued all night long by its shooting percentages, especially because of an ice-cold night by Goudelock and Micov, who combined for 0 for 14 from the field. “It wasn’t only the missed shots – Coach Pianigiani said – Goudelock couldn’t get to the line once. They shot 31 free throws. Honestly, I don’t think that our defense was that much dirtier than theirs”. Olimpia rode a huge game by Arturas Gudaitis who completed three three-point plays, scored 19 points to go along 10 rebounds. Bertans, Jerrells and Kuzminskas scored in spurts, the energy was there for about 27-28 minutes and so was the defense. “But the accuracy wasn’t there and in order to win in Kaunas, you should make your open shots. We didn’t. Mentally we weren’t tough enough and when we lost a little of concentration we had silly turnovers, missed rebounds, we allowed them to shoot free throws and we still couldn’t make our shots”, Pianigiani said.
