With no Sergio Rodriguez, adding up to the absence of Shavon Shields and Gigi Datome, Olimpia came up just a little short in Madrid, losing 92-88 after an overtime. Real Madrid tried to get away many times, including right off the bat with a terrific 25-point first quarter. Olimpia came back every time and finally put its hands on the game in the fourth quarter, building a huge seven-point lead. “Right at that time, we didn’t have the patience that we showed beforehand, we rushed shots, we missed free throws, we turned the ball over and Sergio Llull did what Sergio Llull can do because he is a great player,” Coach Ettore Messina said. With a 7-0 run, Real Madrid tied the game up and forced the overtime. Then, Real led again by Llull went up by seven during extra time in what looked like a game finished. Instead, searching for another miraculous comeback, Olimpia had a 5-0 run to get withing two and even had the possession to tie the game or win it with a last shot. Unfortunately, Malcolm Delaney was called with an offensive foul that basically sealed Real Madrid’s 92-88 win. Olimpia was able to almost overcome the huge absences, playing with a lot of heart and execution. Jerian Grant was outstanding defensively, Davide Alviti had a terrific game in what was some sort of debut, scoring eight points with seven rebounds, Troy Daniels scored 10 points over 12 minutes. It is a painful loss. Nicolò Melli scored 18 points on top of eight rebounds. Olimpia did everything it could to win the game, it came up just inches short of an historic win. “We go back home with the feeling that we throw the game out of the window, a little bit. This happened, we will talk about, discuss it, and we will get better,” Coach Messina added.
