Olimpia’s Italian Cup is over right after its start. Brescia deservedly won 75-72 after a weird game with a strange story itself. Olimpia didn’t find any rhythm offensively and gradually lost control of the tempo and even the defense was terrible in a 45-29 first half. The team hit the ground running in the second half. Went down by 18 and then 10 minutes of excellent basketball on both ends of the floor turned the game around. Olimpia went up late in the third, then started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run and went up by five looking completely in control. At that point everything unraveled again. Unable to score on several open three-point shots, plagued by silly turnovers, Olimpia gave life to Brescia. CJ Massenburg converted a three-point play, Petrucelli tied the game up on a baseline lay-up. Then Brescia took over, made its free throws, and kept Olimpia behind. “Our defense was indecent in the first half, we surrendered at some point, then, when we came back and took the lead, we should have used the experience of our players. Instead we had at least three straight turnovers and we made fouls uncalled for, fouls that gave them easy points from the line. Obviously, it was a great opportunity lost,” Coach Ettore Messina admitted. Brescia had a great first period from Kenny Gabriel who made three threes and in a 11-point third quarter, when Olimpia was at its best, Chris Burns scored seven consecutive points for his team, a three-point play, a long jumper and two free throws. He saved the day for his team before John Petrucelli used its top defense to harass Shabazz Napier and force some costly turnovers down the stretch. Olimpia was the two-time defending Italian Cup champions, but never in its long history was able to win it three in a row. And couldn’t beat the history in Torino neither.
