Olimpia was short of energy and intensity and that resulted in a spiritless defensive game costing the first “real” loss of the EuroLeague season, a 94-86 stunner operated by Gran Canaria. Milan lead by as many as eight points early in the game but eventually lost control of the game, went down by eight at the half, as many as 14 in the third quarter, attempted a furious comeback but couldn’t complete it. “When we had some flow offensively, we haven’t been able to make stops for a couple of possessions”, Coach Simone Pianigiani said at the end. Olimpia came within one in the fourth but Gran Canaria found all the answers with a well-balance offense led by Marcus Eriksson and his 17 points including a very long three in a crucial stretch in the fourth period. Olimpia was led by Mike James, who had 26 points and eight assists, while Gudaitis had a careen-night with 17 rebounds and 12 for 14 from the line. But overall too many players didn’t give enough and Nedovic’ absence was heavy even when Cinciarini’s heart in the second half was instrumental in leading the rally. “We can talk about many details, inside shots that they easuly made and we missed but in the end the diiference was in the energy. We didn’t have enough. We are not brilliant at his times, we paid a toll to the injuries but we need to be able to improve even when we are not in great shape because this is when we become a better team. The EuroLeague is like that, losing when you are not in great shape happens, we’ll try to recover this loss with an unexpcted win but it’s not the end of the world because our record is still very good and maybe later in the season we will have everybody back”, Pianigiani added.
