Shabazz Napier added 12 points, including a clutch three, to his eight assists and led Olimpia to a convincing 87-75 win in Varese, against one of the hottest team in the Italian league and improved its record to a league-best 15-4. Olimpia started the game 10-2 and led basically for the length of the game, with a couple of exception. Varese was able to make a buzzer-beating three with Tomas Woldetensae at the end of the first quarter taking the first lead of the game. Then, it built a short-lived four-point lead. Again, in the third quarter rebuilt it off a three-point play completed by Colbey Ross. However, every single time Olimpia responded with a run. Four consecutive threes, two by Gigi Datome, in the third turned the momentum around. From that point on, Olimpia’s lead never got smaller the five points at the end of the third on a four-point play converted by Jarron Johnson. Olimpia used its defense to stay in control. Brandon Davies had 17 points in 13 minutes before fouling out of a hotly contested game. He led the scorers. But Tim Luwawu-Cabarrot had 16, Napier 12, and more important everybody helped. Kyle Hines anchored another defensive gem, dished four assists too, one less than Billy Baron’s five. Olimpia was 2-for-7 from three in the first half but made seven of 11 attempts in the second. One was made by Nicolò Melli, who had eight rebounds, and saved his two baskets for the stretch. Pippo Ricci also added two threes. “It wasn’t an easy game, because they play well and everything, they do they do it full-speed, so it is hard to run with them. We had a lot of defensive togetherness and offensively I think we moved the ball well. In the second half, we had only five turnovers. We were good in the flow of the game, that is important,” Coach Ettore Messina said.
