Olimpia came up on top in Athens, prevailing over Panathinaikos 79-78 after a game that registered innemurable changes of leads, ties and runs. The Greens took control, apparently, in the fourth, converting a four-point deficit into a seven-point lead. It was the leargest margin of the game, that Olimpia erased in a matter of three possessions, with Micov, Brooks and Roll scoring from the arc. Then, it was a battle, with Nick Calathes leading the charge for Panathinaikos. Olimpia with a lot of poise, energy and pride responded. Riccardo Moraschini made two free throws with 8.8 seconds left, and Olimpia took the lead for good. After the time-out, Calathes tried again his running floater that served him very well in the second half. But this time, Olimpia resisted, controlled the rebound and won 79-78. Vlado Micov led Olimpia with 18 points, Luis Scola added 17 points and nine rebounds. Michael Roll had 16 points and overall Olimpia made 14 threes. “We kept our poise during their 11-0 run, on that I have to congratulate my players. It was a one-point game, so if you win you are good and otherwise you are not that good, but it’s a great road win, early in the season. A lot of work needs to be done, it’s true for everybody basically,” Coach Ettore Messina said at the end. Moraschini made the big plays at the end “and led the team during the comeback, had four assists – Messina said -, but we coldun’t win the game without the outstading defense that Jeff Brooks made over DeShaun Thomas, who is a big part of Panathinaikos”.
