Nikola Mirotic shows his big heart and big soul! He limps, grimaces, is in pain, but in the end he leaves his indelible mark in all the most important moments of the game including the final seconds in which he gets fouled and makes a free throw. Only one, and it would leave the door open to a Red Star miracle that doesn’t happen, so Olimpia wins in Belgrade. The last desperate shot doesn’t happen. It ends 82-80 for Olimpia. The decisive field goal comes from Shavon Shields with 29 seconds left: he turns the corner against Rokas Giedraitis, beats him, gets to the rim and restores the two-point lead. Olimpia defends the margin not with the usual accuracy from the line but with the tenacity of its defense. A great team win with many different protagonists, including Willie Caruso, author of a very precious first half. It was a game interpreted by both teams as a playoff one, nervous but beautiful for three quarters. Then the score stopped, because of tiredness, nervousness and therefore errors. But for Olimpia it was a beautiful, desired and heavy victory. Essentially, it took the game over early in the second quarter with a 7-0 start. Armoni Brooks made some big buckets. Leandro Bolmaro was all over the floor. Shavon Shields was scoreless in the first period, but scored nine points in the second, including three free throws toward the ens. Olimpia led by two at the half, by four after three quarters, when it was Zach LeDay’s turn to lead the team. The fourth quarter was almost a fistfight. Red Stare tied the game up for the first time since the first period ended at 72 and on several times after Nikola Mirotic scoring spree, but never got the lead. Finally, Shields made the big drive and Olimpia deservedly won.
