Keith Langford has won the Euroleague trophy named after the late Alphonso Ford, who spent all his career in Europe, playing also in Italy for Siena and Pesaro, a bog-time scorer especially when he was playing for Olympiacos in Greece. Ford died prematurely because of leukemia. To honor his memory Euroleague decided to name the scoring crown after him. The scoring champ is the one with the highest average after the playoffs with a minimum of games played. Langford scored 17.56 points per game leading all the scorers and winning the trophy for the first time. One year ago, Bobby Brown won the trophy while being coached by Luca Banchi in Siena. It’s the first time an Olimpia player wins the scoring crown. Langford closed his Euroleague big season scoring 28 points in Tel-Aviv in game 4 and raising his playoffs points per game at 20.0. His season high was 29 points, scored three times, first in Kaunas during the regular season then at home against Olympiacos (in the process he reached the 1000-point plateau for his career) and Malaga. He scored in double figures in the last 15 games including the 11 games he participated in the Top16 and the four playoffs games he played. Generally, he has scored in double figures in 31 of the 35 Euroleague games he’s ever played for Olimpia. This year he set his personal best in rebounds (9, 7 defensive) in Bamberg and surpassed the 100-three made barrier. Index rating and fouls drawn are the other stats in which he resulted the best in a Mvp-caliber season. The “Alphonso Ford Trophy” is the only based purely on statistics. The player who won it the most was Igor Rakocevic during three different seasons (2007, 2009, 2011). The other winners are Charles Smith (Pesaro, 2005), Drew Nicholas (Treviso, 2006), Marc Salyers (Roanne, 2008), Linas Kleiza (Olympiacos, 2010), Bo McCalebb (Siena, 2012) and Bobby Brown (Siena, 2013). Keith will accept the award during the special ceremony to be held in Piazza Duomo, in Milano, on May 15th.
