What a way to make a debut for Olimpia, Quinn Ellis! Olimpia won a close-knit battle over Virtus Bologna and qualified for today’s Supercup championship game against Germani Brescia, winner of the first semifinal game against Trento. Olimpia prevailed 93-86 after an overtime controlled right from the beginning. “Our defense step up big in the end, offensively we recognized a mismatch inside and were very disciplined in igniting Zach LeDay down low,” Coach Ettore Messina said. LeDay finshed with 18 points and went 11-for-12 from the line. However, reaching overtime was a lot more complicated. Bologna led for most of the game with minimum margins. Then, the last five minutes of regulations were a streetfight. Olimpia tied the game up on a Pippo Ricci’s corner three and got the lead with 5:13 remaining after Quinn Ellis converted two free throws. Carsen Edwards, who took over for Virtus late in the game, responded and opened up a new five-point lead for Bologna. Shavon Shields, who led the scorers with 23 points, made back-to-back threes and gave Olimpia the lead one more time. Edwards responded after Diouf tied the game up from the line. When Saliou Niang converted two free throws, Bologna led by four with 59 seconds left. LeDay came up big then. He made two free throws and reduced the deficit to two points; took an offensive foul by the same Niang that gave Olimpia a crucial possession; finally he scored by close distance and tied the game up. Edwards, with a step up three, broke Olimpia’s confidence. But after the ensuing time-out, Shields found the light to take a three. The ball hit the rim, Bolmaro (who had a monumental double double) touched it when Pajola directed it to Diouf and Booker found the ball in his hands. So, he dished it to Quinn Ellis. With essentially no time remaining, the Brit point-guard launched a perfect three that had no chance to hit nothing but net. Game tied at 83. Overtime. Finally, Olimpia took over.
