The hottest team in the Italian League, Brescia, won its 11th straight game leading basically from wire to wire over Olimpia, 82-74. Brescia led by as many as 13 points in the first half and late in the game. Olimpia answered back several times, led only momentarily in the first period, but couldn’t take control of the tempo and was never able to sustain its effort. The defense that held Brescia to 64.5 points per game in the previous two encounters was sharper. This time, the two Brescia guards combined for 43 points and won the game for their team, taking advantage also of the outstanding effort of other players, Lee Moore in the first half, Kenny Gabriel, definitely John Petrucelli who led the scorers in the first half with 11 of his 14 points. Brescia hit 12 threes, Milano went 8-for-25 from three-point territory. Olimpia went to the line once in the first half and 11 times for the game, while Brescia converted 18 free throws out of 22. 14 turnovers also had an effect. “When it looked like we could try to win the game, we made some poor decisions in a game played with not enough intensity, on defense and offensively too,” Coach Ettore Messina said. When Olimpia got closer, Brescia always found a way to score, with some great plays. Amedeo Della Valle went 9-for-9 from the line. Olimpia came back from 13 behind to five late in the second quarter, but allowed Brescia to go to the locker room on a 5-0 run including a buzzer-beating jumper off the glass by Gabriel. Again early in the third a 6-0 run was frustrated by five consecutive points scored by Nazr Mitrou-Long. Later in the game, a good stretch of plays was frustrated by a Gabriel buzzer-beating contested three and a step-back three again converted by Mitrou-Long.
