Olimpia struggled early in the game, responded but had another subpar start in the third quarter and its attempt to comeback from 18 points down was fruitless. Bayern win 85-79. Olimpia now leads the best-of-five series 2-1. Game 4 is scheduled to be played on Friday in Munich. Home court has ruled the series so far.
Milan scored just nine points in a first period with ice-cold shooting, but was much more aggressive and efficient in the second when it was able to take the lead off a Jeff Brooks’ corner three. Bayern still led by four 39-35 at the half. The third quarter start was again a difficult one. Led by Vladimir Lucic, Bayern placed a 14-0 run when Olimpia kept missing and didn’t get any stops, until late in the third. At the beginning of the fourth, Malcolm Delaney had a four-point play followed by a three-point play and shrank the margin to six. That was the second attempt to come back in the game. But Lucic (who had 27 points) answered back with a lethal three. Olimpia was able to come within five, but during the last minute. It was too late to steal the game. Lucic from the line made most of his free throws (11-for-12 at the end of the night) and saved the margin.
“We didn’t have our best night, I think that our start in the third quarter was the deciding factor of the game, but now we go back to the hotel, rest and try to prepare for Game 4,” Coach Ettore Messina said. Malcolm Delaney led the scorers with 18 points, but Olimpia didn’t have enough consistency offensively. Shavon Shields and Sergio Rodriguez had 11 points each.
