Let alone the numbers for once. Let them speak another story. Alessandro Gentile had huge numbers during this season. He led the Italian league in scoring during the playoffs. He was second during the Euroleague Top 16 in scoring. Against Sassari in the disappointing semifinals series he had five consecutive games with 20 points or more. He did things exclusively reserved for the greatests. But Alessandro Gentile at 22, the youngest Captain in Olimpia’s history, is muche more than that. He evolved during the season from a great player to a great player well aware of his potential. He became everything, a rebounder (18 between game 5 and 6 of the semifinals), a passer (he increased his assist average for the sixth straight season) and more than that. He became a leader. A true captain. He played with a devastated ankle. He shrugged off his game 6 muscular trouble, to play with courage and energy. You can say whatever you want, if you know Alessandro Gentile you know that he never give up. He never refuses a picture, an autograph or a smile to a kid, even on the road, even in the heat of a difficult moment. He willed Olimpia to game 7. He couldn’t deliver the last win, he came up short. He had 6 assists in that game. Sometimes a demoralizing, devastating loss can raise the stature of a player, an athlete up to legendary status. Gentile is already there. A Captain. Our Captain.
