The last EuroLeague game of the season was frustrating: Olimpia lost on a defensive rebound that Amath M’Baye tried to swat away in order to preserve the win and, incredibly, close its run into the net giving Panathinaikos a 96-95 come-from-behind overtime thriller. Olimpia was spectacular in the first half, scoring 55 points, leading by as many as 17 points, shooting 78% from two. Again, late in the third quarter the lead ballooned again at 17. Then Panathinaikos mounted a furious and expected rally. Olimpia had some costly turnovers, some missed rebounds, went ice-cold from the perimeter but kept the lead with aggresiveness, rebounds, clutch free throws. Panathinaikos took the first lead with 14 seconds remaining in regulation on a Mike James’ driving lay-up. Dairis Bertans tied the score basically at the buzzer making three free throws and the overtime was a tosser. Andrew Goudelock made the two go-ahead baskets, the last with seven seconds left was potentially was the winner. Then James drove again, missed and the rebound found its undesired way into the net. “Without Theodore, who was ready to compete in a game like this yet, and Micov who’s a very important player to us, given the circumstances and the opponent, I’d say we play a great and unfortunate game. We missed three lay-ups, we had some turnovers, we didn’t read well a couple of situations when Gudaitis was covered inside by a smaller player but when the fatigue sets in making mistakes is understandable. We should’ve been more determined in making a couple of easy shots or spending better fouls but in the end we never gave up and lost on wild rebound. I’m upset because this is another game we deserved to win”, Coach Pianigiani explained at the end.
