A nightmarish shooting night, 19-for-60 from the field, in the end doomed Olimpia’s chance to reach the Supercup championship game in Brescia. Virtus Bologna won 72-64 after an overtime and a weird last minute in the regulation. That was when Coach Messina was called for a technical foul that extended Bologna’s late lead. A furious attempt to change the course of the game was almost successful. Billy Baron made a three, then – three points down with 3.5 seconds left – he was fouled on the act of shooting from three quarters of the court. It was Bologna’s coach Sergio Scariolo turn to get a technical. Baron made his first free throws and missed the potential winning fourth. In the overtime, Olimpia best player on the court, Devon Hall, who finished the game with 19 points, was not available because he fouled out at the end. And the bad shooting night didn’t change, so Virtus won the game. “Both teams struggled offensively, then they found some rhythm because of the middle pick and roll. Our percentages were not adequate enough to win at this level. It is a game we can learn from if we understand how hard we need to work, how long the season will be and with so many players out limiting the number of mistakes is crucial,” Coach Ettore Messina said.
Olimpia didn’t have its starting point guard Kevin Pangos and Shavon Shields, so two starters out of five, plus Gigi Datome. However, the team rode its defense to stay ahead for the most part. A 9-0 run in the first quarter launched a couple of attempts to get away. Early in the second when Devon Hall made his fourth three of the night, Olimpia built a 12-point commanding lead. But Hall was the only effective offensively, nobody else found any rhythm. Therefore, Bologna was able to stay close. Early in the second half, when Hall again made a personal 5-0 run, Olimpia rebuilt a nine-point lead. But nobody came to help Hall. When Virtus completed its comeback and took a lead, Kyle Hines and Nicolò Melli managed to take over a little bit and keep the margin narrow. In the end, Billy Baron finally was able to find his shooting back and forced the overtime.
