A nightmarish shooting night, 11-for-24 from two, 8-for-34 from three-point range, doomed Olimpia’s chances in Bologna. Virtus prevailed 69-61 in Game 3. Olimpia now leads the championship series 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled to be played in Bologna on Friday night. “It was a high-energy game, a lot of tension, nervousness, we didn’t shoot well, we had too many free turnovers, not enough to win. We stayed in the game; however, we had some chances,” Coach Ettore Messina said at the end. Olimpia started well, made its first two threes, took an early lead, and dominated the boards. Eventually, it couldn’t sustain with his excellent defense all the troubles it had at scoring the ball. Billy Baron had some momentum every now and then, leading the team with 15 points, Shavon Shields had some spurts, Devon Hall at one point in the third period made two straight threes. Nicolò Melli finished with nine points and eight rebounds, in the end was tough inside. Olimpia had some opportunities to make the game contested through the end but missed its chances. After Devon Hall’s two threes closed the gap in the third quarter, turnovers and missed shots allowed Virtus to get off the hook. Again, in the fourth, Olimpia got within seven and had possession, twice. But a turnover and missed wide-open three essentially finished the game. Hackett made a three, the deficit returned to ten points and Virtus had the game won. “Obviously they apply a lot of pressure on Shabazz Napier, he needs to help himself, we need to help him more moving forward,” Coach Messina added.
