Another frustrating EuroLeague loss for Olimpia. 77-71 against Maccabi, who turned the game around late in the third quarter. Up to that point, Olimpia led most of the game, by as many as 10 points. A 12-0 run gave Maccabi the lead for the first time in the second half. The game stayed close through the middle of the fourth quarter. Maccabi took off with a seven-point lead, that Olimpia reduced to one off Billy Baron’s shooting spree and Nicolò Melli’s three from the corner. But it was all it could do. “We played well for a good part of the game then we threw everything away. Once more three thirngs cost us the game: turnovers, free throws and defensive mistakes we could avoid easily, like going under a screen, miscommunications, offensive rebounds allowed in the second half to the best offensive rebounding team in the league. We’ll work, we have to be better as a team because at any level to win you have to play better than that, you have to limit your turnovers, make your free throws and avoid silly defensive mistakes. That’s it,” Coach Ettore Messina explained at the end. Baron scored 18 points, 16 in the second and in spurts he single-handedly led the team offensively. Luwawu-Cabarrot had a very promising first half, scoring 13 points, but he got ice cold in the second when Maccabi’s defense was much more aggressive.
