The third period was instrumental again in giving Olimpia its seventh straight win in the Italian league. Holding Derthona to 11 points, a one-point first half deficit was turned into a commanding 10-point lead, capped by a Nico Mannion’s coast-to-coast to beat the buzzer. The fourth quarter was under control especially after Diego Flaccadori’s back-to-back threes. Olimpia won 87-78, after leading by as many as 18 points in the second half. Zach LeDay and Armoni Brooks didn’t impact the offense as they are accustomed to do, so other players stepped up and that was the best news of the day after the huge defensive second half. Leandro Bolmaro coming off the bench was huge at both ends of the floor, finished with 19 points, 7-for-8 from the field and six rebounds. Nico Mannion led the team offensively in the first half (13, he finished with 15). Quinn Ellis scored in double digit too, Josh Nebo dominated the boards in the third quarter, Bryant Dunston gave the team a big lift in the second period. Olimpia had some foul trouble to deal with. Ellis had three in the first half and Mannion had two quick fuls called on him early. So, to protect them, Coach Poeta started the second half with a big line-up featuring Bolmaro, Guduric and Brooks all of them on the court. “We raised the ball pressure a little, we became more aggressive,” Coach Poeta pointed out. The crucial run was a 11-0 run after Derthona led 60-58. Olimpia allowed one point in the second half of the third quarter and that was a free throw off a technical foul called on Josh Nebo. After it, Olimpia never looked back.
