“We want to make the fans proud”: Sergio Rodriguez signs with Olimpia for three years


Pallacanestro Olimpia Milan has signed a 3-year contract with Sergio Rodriguez, a 1.91 mt point-guard, born on June 12, 1986 in San Cristobal de la Laguna, on the island of Tenerife, coming from CSKA Moscow. ”I’m extremely excited and motivated by this new chapter of my career. Coming to Milan means a lot to me and my family. We are very happy. Having the opportunity to represent such a big club like Olimpia, and play in a different country, was very important in making this decision to come. Ettore Messina was also a big factor. HIS CAREER – At the age of 14, Sergio Rodriguez left the island of Tenerife to play in Bilbao and then moved to Estudiantes Madrid where he debuted in the Liga ACB at 17. After two seasons in Madrid, he was chosen with the number 27 of the 2006 NBA draft by Phoenix and traded to Portland where he played for three seasons. In 200,9 he moved to Sacramento and later to New York. In the summer of 2010, after four years of NBA, he returned to Spain to play for Real Madrid until the 2015/16 season. During that span, he won the 2015 EuroLeague, was named the EuroLeague’s MVP in 2014, won the Spanish championship three times, four times the King’s Cup, three times the Spanish Super Cup. In 2016, he returned to the NBA to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. At the end of that season, he returned to Europe to play in CSKA Moscow: in two years he won the 2019 EuroLeague and twice the VTB League.

NOTES – Rodriguez played the Hoop Summit in 2004, the annual challenge between the best 18-year-olds in America and the rest of the world. In 2004, he won the European Under-18 gold medal and was named the competition’s MVP. In 2013/14, he was included in the All-EuroLeague first team, in 2017/18 he was included in the second. In 2006, he won the World Cup with the Spanish national team; in 2012 he won the Olympic silver medal; in the 2016 Olympics, he won the bronze medal (he made the decisive free-throw against Australia in 3rd-4th place final); he won the European gold medal in 2015, the silver medal in 2007, the bronze medal in 2013 and 2017. He won the 2015 Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid. He scored 23 points in 21 minutes against Real Madrid in the 2019 EuroLeague 2019 semi-final game.
