Olimpia’s perfect night: after paying homage to Meneghin, Maccabi was beaten 92-88

During the night dedicated to Dino Meneghin, his legendary number 11, raised to the roof in a moving halftime ceremony, Olimpia respected its past by defeating Maccabi 92-88 after a terrific game that counted a lot of moves, countermoves, different kind of line-ups, many more great plays. If Scottie Wilbekin scored 25 points with six threes in a impressive shooting exhibition, Sergio Rodriguez responded with 18 points and a season-high 11 assists, but Olimpia’s win was determined by a team effort. Luis Scola had a team-high 20 points with three crucial threes, Nemanja Nedovic exploded at some points and Olimpia led most of the game including the entire second half, scoring 92 points over the best defensive team of the EuroLeague so far, for points allowed. Coach Messina was able to play with different line-ups, using a big 3 at times and also a three-guard line-up at other, finishing with Vlado Micov at the 4. Olimpia led by as many as 12 points early in the fourth, but Maccabi responded with a 8-0 run. After Messina’s time-out, with a completely different line-up, Olimpia had another 6-0 run that created margin. Maccabi had won six straight games, but in a magical night Olimpia seemed to fin a way to overcome defense and size. “It was a difficult game, thay are a physical team and every turnover became like an assist, because they great at running to make you pay dearly every turnover – Coach Ettore Messina said -, but we have been very effectice varying our offense, using pick and rolls, exits and some posting-up. This is a great win, but it’s already time to focus on another big game coming up against Efes.”
