Olimpia hit the ground running and defeated Trieste 88-73

Olimpia led wire to wire and defeated Trieste 88-73, with five double-digit scorers led by Michael Roll, who had 22 points and was the most efficient at shooting the ball. Olimpia was plagued again by three-point shooting, but after a mediocre first half found some rhythm late in the game and kept control of the game. Luis Scola added to his 13 points also seven assists, reading beautifully what the defense threw at him. Trieste doubled him down and he was at his best kicking out the ball. Sergio Rodriguez also had seven assists. Olimpia finished with 28, moving and sharing the ball well. The defensive effort was there, “not everybody is ready, some things take time, but the effort was there so I was pleased,” Coach Messina said. What prevented Olimpia from killing the game earlier was shooting, but gradually everybody improved. “I think we did more good things than bad things – Messina reflected after the game – I changed the starting line-up simply because we were coming off four or five bad starts in a row. I inserted Rodriguez and Della Valle, I also used Jeff Brooks at the 3 spot because I feel he can be perfectly suited for coming off the bench and playing two different positions when Vlado Micov will return. We are still in the process of figuring out who plays well with which teammates and when.”. Coach Messina was pleased also with the Rodriguez-Scola connection. “Their ability at passing the ball is important, it’s a special connection that they have and with a new team it’s helping everybody out there. Scola can give us a los-post presence that will be more tangible when Gudaitis will be back, too.”
