It was disappointing because Olimpia never got any rhytm or intensity in the Italy Cup quarterfinals, losing 105-87 to an ispired Cantù team that led wire to wire. Cantù set the tempo, Olimpia tried to stay close, but missed too many open shots, had too many turnovers and couldn’t keep the defensive intensity up. A couple of times in the second half had some promising possessions but the defense didn’t sustain the offense or it was the other way around. Coach Pianigiani tried to play small when it was apparent that establishing an inside game was problematic, but the move didn’t amount to nothing. “We didn’t have the right tension. They were on fire early in the game and we panicked. In the second half we raised the number of possessions trying to comeback and that’s why we allowed 105 points. It was a lot worse allowing 57 in the first half. It could sound weird but our problem was more at the offensive end of the court than at the defensive end. Now it’s time to make some reflection because it’s February and we lost a trophy we wanted to get, the players wanted to get. The didn’t perform not because a lack of effort”.
